Japanese Semiconductor Firm NMB Minebea Signs MoU for Tiruvallur Facility
NMB Minebea, a subsidiary of MinebeaMitsumi, will invest Rs 1,980 crore to establish a manufacturing and research and development facility in Tiruvallur district. The Government of Tamil Nadu signed the Memorandum of Understanding in the presence of Chief Minister M. K. Stalin at the Secretariat in Chennai.
Location and Infrastructure
The unit will come up at the Mahindra Origins Industrial Park and will focus on building a comprehensive manufacturing ecosystem for high-value semiconductor components. Origins by Mahindra, Chennai is an industrial cluster spread over approximately 600 acres with Phase-1 spanning approximately 300 acres, and is Tamil Nadu's first IGBC Platinum Pre-certified Industrial Cluster, developed as a joint venture between Mahindra World City, Chennai and Sumitomo Corporation, Japan. The facility is strategically located on NH-16 (Kolkata Highway) and within the influence zone of the Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor and Chennai-Vizag Industrial Corridor.
Products and Manufacturing Focus
The facility will produce Insulated-Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs), Integrated Circuits (ICs), as well as motors and sensors. These technologies are widely used in electric vehicles, industrial automation, renewable energy systems, and advanced electronics applications.
Employment and Economic Impact
This venture is expected to generate 1,400 jobs, with an emphasis on high-skilled technical roles, which will account for more than 40 percent of the new workforce. The new unit is expected to integrate local suppliers into global electronics supply chains.
